SIA History

Schenectady Insuring Agency (SIA) is an independent insurance agency that traces its beginnings back to the turn of the century (the twentieth century that is). During our nearly one hundred years serving the Capital Region, we have become known for our exceptional service, wide range of competitive products, and the best pricing available. SIA owes its long success to a tradition we continue to uphold today–always put our clients interests first.

Located in historic Mohawk Valley, the gateway to New York’s west, SIA takes pride in making Schenectady our home as well as our namesake. In the early twentieth century, our city was the birthplace of the General Electric Company. It was also the home base of the American Locomotive Works, the premier builder of the train engines that moved materials and supplies throughout a young and developing country.

Since 1913, SIA has mirrored the growth and changes in City of Schenectady. The SIA organization traces its roots back to approximately 1855 when several smaller agencies joined forces. The combination became Schenectady Insuring Agency when it officially incorporated in 1913. In 1986, two independent insuring agencies, SIA and Johnson, Jessen and McMahon, merged. The two offices were combined and moved to SIA's current home at 155 Erie Boulevard in the City of Schenectady. Where SIA once mainly served the people of the Capital District, today we count customers throughout New York State and the adjoining states.

Today, at the start of the twenty-first century, SIA is looking forward to being a continuing force in growth of companies and families throughout the Capital Region. SIA is a full-service agency that serves the insurance needs of more than 4,000 organizations and families. The knowledge we have gained from our long history has prepared us to provide for our client’s insurance needs–for a long time to come.

SIA has a staff of 14 insurance professionals ready to help you as needed. We represent the best carriers in the insurance industry and our almost 100 year of experience will allow you to rest assured you have the best protection possible–whatever your situation. Our portfolio of insurance carriers includes Hartford Insurance Group, Met Life, NY Central Mutual, Progressive, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, St. Paul Travelers and Utica National.
